There is a reason why doctors and nutritionists are talking about gut health more than ever before. The human gut is home to trillions of microorganisms that together form the gut microbiome. These tiny organisms help digest food, make certain vitamins, regulate immunity and even communicate with the brain. In recent years, studies have shown that poor gut health may be linked with issues ranging from digestive troubles and obesity to anxiety and weakened immunity.A study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) has repeatedly highlighted the importance of dietary fibre and traditional eating patterns for better digestive health and disease prevention. As gut health concerns rise in urban India, experts say the answer may not lie in expensive supplements. It may already be sitting in the kitchen."The importance of gut health is often underestimated till people start facing issues like chronic acidity, bloating, irregular digestion, low energy, or frequent infections. Indian kitchens have a history of having a number of naturally gut-friendly foods, but modern eating habits are steadily pushing them out of daily diets," said Ms Komal Bhati, Consultant, Clinical Nutritionist, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad. Here are seven Indian foods that nutritionists often recommend for a happier and healthier gut.
