Renowned ecologist Prof. Madhav Gadgil, who passed away at 83, championed the protection of the Western Ghats. Leading the WGEEP, he mapped the entire 1.29 lakh sq km region into high, moderate, and low sensitivity zones. Despite bureaucratic hurdles & political resistance his science-driven, community-focused approach ensured a sustainable framework for conserving this vital biodiversity hotspot.
