Bryan Johnson says his stomach is 'eating itself': What is AIG?

Published on: July 1, 2026, 11:17 p.m. | Source: The Indian Express

Bryan Johnson revealed that he has been diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis (AIG), a condition in which the immune system attacks the stomach's acid-producing cells, after years of unexplained low ferritin levels that did not improve despite diet and supplements. He shared that the disease, which may affect 2–5 per cent of people and often remains hidden, can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, iron deficiency, anaemia, and an increased long-term risk of stomach complications. Experts Dr Ruby Taparia and Dr Manjusha Agarwal explained that autoimmune gastritis commonly occurs alongside autoimmune thyroid disorders and develops silently, with symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, bloating, indigestion, numbness, and poor concentration often appearing only after significant damage. While there is currently no cure, early diagnosis through blood tests and endoscopy, along with vitamin B12 and iron replacement, regular monitoring, and management of associated autoimmune conditions, can help prevent complications and improve long-term health.
