Constipation is often underestimated, but it can trigger serious health risks, including fainting during or after bowel movements, a condition known as defecation syncope. A 55-year-old man in Hyderabad collapsed in his bathroom while straining to pass stool. Dr. Sudhir Kumar, senior neurologist at CMC Vellore, explained that straining can slow the heart rate and lower blood pressure, briefly cutting blood flow to the brain. Older adults, people with chronic constipation, heart conditions, or blood pressure medications are most at risk.
