Can your body run a health monitor without a battery? Japan has done it-now your sweat can generate electricity to power wearable health sensors

Published on: March 5, 2026, 7:56 p.m. | Source: The Economic Times

Japan has done it. Your sweat can now generate electricity. Engineers at the Tokyo University of Science built a wearable device that turns human sweat into electricity. The sweat-powered wearable biosensor produced about 165 µW/cm² power output in lab tests. That is enough energy for low-power health monitors and wearable sensors. The device uses enzymatic biofuel cells and special printable enzyme ink. It converts lactate in sweat into electrical energy. This breakthrough could enable battery-free wearable health monitoring devices. Experts say the technology may power future fitness trackers, medical patches, and smart biosensors without charging. Simply sweating during exercise could keep wearable health devices running.
