More exercise isn’t always healthy: CMC Vellore doctor explains how much running, walking, strength training is safe

Published on: Sept. 14, 2025, 8:19 p.m. | Source: The Economic Times

Regular exercise is essential for health, but more isnt always better. Dr. Sudhir Kumar, senior neurologist at CMC Vellore, explains the ideal amounts for running, walking, and strength training. Moderate running (30–50 km/week) provides maximum benefits, while ultra-high mileage may increase risks. Walking up to 7,000–10,000 steps daily boosts health, but extra steps offer limited additional gain. Strength training is most effective at two to three sessions per week; overtraining can lead to injury and hormonal imbalance.
