Nutritionist says homemade biscuits also must not be eaten everyday: ‘Even if you are buying a cookie made using ghee and jaggery…’

Published on: Oct. 14, 2025, 7:30 p.m. | Source: The Indian Express

Nutritionist Amita Gadre and consultant dietitian Garima Goyal warn against consuming biscuits and cookies daily, even if they are homemade and use seemingly better ingredients like ghee and jaggery. Gadre points out that cookies are inherently high in flour, fat, and sugar (empty calories), while Goyal clarifies that homemade versions still have a poor nutritional profile due to being rich in refined flour, sugar, and fat, making them energy dense and low in essential nutrients. Metabolically, frequent consumption can cause blood sugar spikes, increase cravings, and potentially lead to weight gain or insulin resistance, while also displacing truly nutrient-dense snacks like fruit and nuts. Experts advise treating these as occasional indulgences and suggest moderation and smart swaps like using whole grains, dates, and adding fibre through nuts and seeds to improve their health profile.
