Addressing the common question of daily water intake, Dr. Amit Saraf, Director of Internal Medicine at Jupiter Hospital, Thane, confirms that while there is no single rule for everyone, male and female hydration needs do generally differ, with men typically needing about 3 to 3.7 litres and women around 2.5 to 2.7 litres daily, though these numbers should be viewed only as flexible guidelines dependent on weight, activity, climate, and health. He stresses that relying solely on thirst is a late signal of dehydration, recommending instead to sip water consistently throughout the day and to use pale yellow urine as the best indicator of proper hydration. Furthermore, Dr. Saraf notes that 20-30% of daily hydration can come from foods like fruits, vegetables, and natural drinks (excluding sugary and highly caffeinated beverages), but he warns that overhydration is rare but possible, potentially leading to dangerously diluted sodium levels, with the simplest and most effective rule being to listen to your body, keep water accessible, and prioritize consistent sipping over strictly counting litres.
