‘Wear a bigger size but…’: Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar on why women gain weight during menopause

Published on: Aug. 26, 2025, 1:30 p.m. | Source: The Indian Express

According to celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, women often gain weight during perimenopause and menopause because the body naturally uses fat cells to produce estrogen, which is a form of self-made hormone replacement therapy. As the ovaries produce less estrogen, the body uses adipose tissue to support vital functions like bone and heart health. Dr. Shweta Wazir, a senior gynecologist, agrees that this slight weight gain is a natural adaptive process. Both experts stress that instead of focusing on weight, women should prioritize maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes consistent exercise, a diet of wholesome, home-cooked food, and stress management. They advise that a few extra kilos at this stage are not a negative outcome as long as other health markers, like blood pressure and blood sugar, remain stable.
