Paediatrician Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh and other experts are raising concerns about excessive protein consumption, especially among young adults, which is leading to elevated creatinine levels and potential kidney strain. Creatinine, a waste product of muscle metabolism, is an indicator of kidney health; levels above the normal range (e.g., 1.2 mg/dL or higher) can signal kidney dysfunction. Dr. Viswanath Billa and Dr. Mahesh Prasad explain that high protein intake, whether from diet or supplements, can overtax the kidneys, particularly when coupled with poor hydration or pre-existing conditions. They recommend that active individuals stick to a maximum of 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, primarily from natural food sources like lentils, eggs, and lean meats, and emphasize avoiding protein powders for those under 14-15 unless there's a dietary deficiency. Key recommendations include carefully reading supplement labels for additives, maintaining good hydration, and undergoing regular kidney function check-ups, as kidney issues often present without early symptoms. There's also a call for greater transparency and stricter quality control in the dietary supplement industry to ensure consumer safety.
